Following the inauguration of the Electoral Committee, which, according to the Students’ Union Constitution, is responsible for the organization, conduct, and supervision of all union elections, preparations were made for the upcoming SUG election for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The election, initially scheduled to hold today, 30th April 2026, was announced alongside the electoral calendar and screening procedures released by the committee. The screening process included academic verification by the ICT Department, internal security screening conducted by the AAU CSO, external security screening carried out by the Department of State Services (DSS), as well as any other relevant screening processes considered appropriate by the committee.
According to the laid-down guidelines guiding the election process, any candidate who fails to secure a pass recommendation from any of these three departments stands to be disqualified, as stated in the Students’ Union Constitution under Article 9, Section 39.
However, earlier yesterday, 29th April 2026, reports emerged within the student community that some candidates who had initially been cleared by the committee were later disqualified due to a delayed report from one of the three major departments responsible for qualification and disqualification decisions.
This development caused significant unrest and reactions across the student community, prompting the school management, in a bid to maintain law and order within the university environment, to approve the postponement of the Students’ Union Government election until further notice.
A new date for the election is expected to be communicated through the institution’s official channels, and students are encouraged to remain focused on their academic activities while preparing for the upcoming first semester examination.
